It's another bright beautiful day from this chair--- the sky is a gorgeous blue, the birds are chirping, the trees are resplendent in full-leafed regalia and there are currently no squirrels perched on the garbage can, turning the trash into a breakfast buffet.
I was chatting with a writer friend via IM last night, about the trend towards characters from romance novels blogging-- yanno, in first person. We both decided it made us uncomfortable to both read such a blog. Now, if this is something you've done personally, GREAT! Send me a link to your blog so I can see for myself how you've done it. But for me to write a blog from say, Coralie's (heroine in Cupid on a Mission)POV, I'm thinkin' it would read like it was me trying very hard to channel a character I wrote in 3rd person, through a first person point of view. Did that make any sense? GGG.
I do believe there is tremendous value in webbies devoted to specific novels or series of novels, I've done this myself, actually, twice, so far: the Blue Plate Special: Pops' Girls series I wrote with Shara Jones and Meg Allison, and The Pendant series, which I'm currently writing with Susan Atwood.
For the Pendant webbie, I have been contemplating doing character blogs and interviews. But I'm not sure how it would sound, how it would come across, or how readers would react.
So, what do ya'll think about characters blogging as themselves? Sound off, one, two... Sound off... three, four... Sound off... 1, 2, 3, 4! (Sorry. Couldn't help myself.)

Raises wing, er, hand. That would be me asking the questions on IM about characters appearing in first person on blogs etc. It does make me uncomfortable, if it seems the character has appeared in 'my world' or that character's author's real world. If, on the other hand, the character draws me into his/her 'world' in some way via a first person contact, then I'm for it, it can be an enriching experience. Looking forward to hearing other's thoughts on this.

I don't like it. It annoys me. I'm sure it can be done really really well, but I haven't encountered that yet. So my opinion is--don't!

YIKES! Someone's characters escaped from their minds, and hijacked the computer? Well, that's what it sounds like to me.
Interesting that the responses are all leaning in the same direction. So, anyone out there with anything positive to say about this character blogging thing? I'm particularly interested in how effective you think it is as a promo tool (if you use it), and I'd LOVE a link to read what you've done.
